Patient Navigation Fundamentals is now being offered online!

Topics in this comprehensive “Level 1” training include patient navigation history and role, patient communication, health promotion and professional conduct. Don‘t miss this opportunity to network with other patient navigators!

This 8-week virtual course includes both online coursework (reading, quizzes, assignments) as well as Live Learning Sessions via Zoom web conferencing. Participants are expected to complete assignments each week prior to attending the live learning session. These interactive sessions are an opportunity for participants to connect with fellow navigators and our expert instructors to apply the concepts to their daily work. 

Please note: The time commitment is estimated to be 2-3 hours per week, but may be more or less. Permission from your supervisor is required. Attendance at the live learning sessions and completion of 80 percent of course assignments are required to receive a certificate of completion. Motivational Interviewing is NOT included in this course.

Patient Navigation History and Overview

  • Describe the history and purpose of patient navigation
  • Describe the role and responsibility of the patient navigator
  • Write a short statement that describes your role as a patient navigator
  • Describe ways to develop effective relationships with other healthcare team members

Patient Communication Strategies

  • Describe communication strategies for building effective client relationships
  • Describe effective ways to ask questions that assess patient needs
  • List ways to resolve conflict
  • Identify problem-solving steps in healthcare team member relationships
  • Assess patient strengths and barriers to care

Patient Resources

  • Create a community resource map
  • Describe effective communication skills and strategies for working with community agencies and patient resource organizations

Professional Boundaries

  • Describe a professional “caring relationship”
  • Describe ways to maintain professional boundaries
  • Identify the signs of compassion fatigue
  • Create a healthy boundaries self-care plan

Ethical Decision Making

  • Describe four common approaches to ethical decision making
  • Describe the values-based decision-making process

Patient Confidentiality and Patient Bill of Rights

  • List day-to-day activities that involve patient confidentiality and are subject to HIPAA regulations
  • Identify the main components of the Patient’s Bill of Rights

Health Disparities

  • Define “social determinants of health” and “health disparities”
  • Identify common causes of health disparities
  • Identify ways to provide culturally competent services and address language barriers

Assess Patient Readiness for Change

  • Assess client readiness to make health decisions
  • Apply health beliefs to reduce barriers and deliver health messages

Health Literacy

  • Describe why it is important to improve health information readability
  • Re-write a health information paragraph at an 8th grade reading level
  • List ways to tailor health messages to client needs

Registration Information

Refund and cancellation policy:

  • If you are unable to attend the course, you must cancel your registration at least 14 days (2 weeks) before the first day of course in order to receive a full refund.
  • If you cancel with less than 14 days (2 weeks) notice, you will be subject to a $75 cancellation fee.
  • To cancel, you must send an email to admin@patientnavigatortraining.org.
  • No-shows will not be granted a refund.
  • Refunds will be issued on the original card used for payment OR as a credit toward a future course. 

Please note: The PNTC requires a minimum number of students registered to hold a course. If the minimum enrollment is not reached 10 days prior to the course date, the course may be cancelled. Participants will be notified via email and registrations will be refunded in full.
