Description

Coalitions and collaborations develop because of a common problem and genuine desire to collectively address the issue. A facilitator, or co-facilitators, play a key role in the success of such endeavors, by creating a safe and productive framework in which participants operate, while also promoting forward progress. The facilitator structures meetings, helps participants connect diverse ideas, and helps the group in working toward mutually identified and achievable goals. The most important role of the facilitator is to lay the groundwork for trust to grow as the partnership develops. The facilitator builds a foundation of trust and commitment by: 

Establishing brainstorming processes to allow all ideas to surface and minimize potential imbalances of power;
Making sure everyone is aware of the methods for making decisions and clearly identifying what is agreed upon; and
Addressing difficult situations, such as power and equity, as they arise.

Participants will learn facilitation techniques for coalitions and collaborations. Specifically, participants will learn the five stages of group development, and facilitation strategies to keep your meetings focused and on task. The trainer will engage participants in a skill building activity to generate ideas and determine which ideas to pursue. Techniques to effectively co-facilitate will be shared and participants will identify successes and common challenges they have experienced when co-facilitating groups. Lastly, small group activities will be used to teach strategies to prevent and intervene in difficult situations. Participants will have the opportunity to share difficult situations they have experienced and identify techniques to resolve these issues in the future.  

The trainer will use a variety of teaching and learning strategies, including small and large group discussion, time for personal reflection, and developing personalized action plans to implement learning to their work setting.
