Public Health Sciences Skills

The Rocky Mountain Public Health Training Center is offering an opportunity for public health professionals from around the country to participate in a unique, online training series, which covers core concepts like: defining public health issues, conducting community assessments, prioritizing options, and evaluating program and policy impacts. Read more about the topics.

Participants will watch recorded lectures and complete homework assignments and then attend online live learning sessions. A facilitator will lead guided discussions and activities related to the online content with the cohort of participants.  A topic expert will also be on hand to answer questions and engage in the discussion. These sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to connect evidence-based decision-making concepts to their daily work.

This online course uses a flipped-classroom approach. This gives you the opportunity to work through course content on your own time prior to connecting with a small group of peers during a live learning session. All from the convenience of your home or office.

What to Expect

  • This course will take 10 weeks to complete.
    • Online course materials
    • 9 live sessions (Please put these sessions on your calendar)
    • Course schedule – Thursdays, 9:00-10:00 am
      • March 24th – Course shell opens - NO SESSION
      • April 7th – Introduction (extra half-hour, 9:00-10:30 am MST)
      • April 14th – Community Assessment
      • April 21st – Quantifying the Issue
      • April 28th – Initial Statement
      • May 5th – Searching and Summarizing the Literature
      • May 12th – Prioritization
      • May 19nd – Action Planning
      • May 26th – Economic Evaluation
      • June 2nd – Evaluation
  • Online course materials
    • You will have activities to do on your own between the live meetings.  The activities will include things like watching videos and reading.
    • There will be a short assignment to complete in preparation for each live session. (Live sessions go quickly. Doing the activities and assignments helps you use the time well.)
  • Live Sessions
    • A facilitator will lead guided discussions and activities related to the online content with you and your classmates.
    • A topic expert will also be on hand to answer questions and engage in the discussion.
    • Live sessions give you the opportunity to connect concepts of evidence-based decision-making to your daily work.
  • Communication
    • You should receive 2 emails from us before the course begins.  Please email us at registration.rmphtc@ucdenver.eduif they do not show up in your inbox (please check your spam folder, as well).
      • Registration confirmation – immediately after registering
      • Course welcome and instructions – 2 weeks before the first live session
  • Technology
    • Live Sessions
      • You must join the Live Learning Sessions by video (an external webcam or built-in camera in your laptop, tablet, or smartphone).  Our staff can help you get set up if this is new for you.
    • Online course materials
      • You will be sent an invitation to the Learning Management System (Canvas) approximately 2 weeks before the first Live Learning Session.  You will need to sign in, do some activities and make sure that you know how to connect to the Live Learning Session.  Don’t worry about the technology!  We have staff to help you.  You’ll receive all the information you need once you log in.


Learning Objectives

After completing the assignments and attending the live sessions of the EBPH online course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the basic concepts and the value of evidence-based decision making
  • Define the components of a community assessment and identify the types of data for assessing the needs and assets of the population/community of interest
  • Develop a concise written statement of the public/community health problem, issue or policy under consideration in a measurable manner
  • Find and use various data sources for public health practice
  • Describe and locate resources that assist in searching and summarizing the scientific literature
  • Identify and practice methods for prioritizing program and policy options
  • Identify and discuss the importance of key characteristics of planning and logic models
  • Describe the steps involved in conducting an economic evaluation
  • Discuss the concepts of measurement validity and reliability
Length of Learning Opportunity
1.5 hour introductory live learning session + 8 one-hour live learning sessions = 9.5 hours

  • Solidify your learning through scheduled, facilitated discussions with subject matter experts and your peers, held via bidirectional video. Ask questions; share your knowledge and experience; and learn from others.
  • Continue to enjoy access to the online content and resources indefinitely after the end of the course.
