Evidence-Based Public Health (EBPH) - September 21

Ideal for: Public Health Professionals, Public Policy Practitioners, Global Health Practitioners

Take your evidence-based decision-making skills to the next level! Through this course, you’ll learn to develop a concise written statement of a public or community health problem, issue, or policy—and how to measure it. Explore various data sources, practice methods for prioritizing program and policy options, and learn about planning and logic models. Finally, you’ll learn how to conduct an economic evaluation and concepts of measurement validity and reliability.

The goal of this 10-week course is to help public health practitioners think critically about issues of health equity, and how you can utilize evidence-based decision-making as a tool to advance equity in your communities.

What to Expect

We use a flipped-classroom approach, so you’ll work through course content independently and then connect with a small cohort of peers weekly for live learning sessions that provide an opportunity to ask questions, share your knowledge, and learn from others.

9 Live Learning Sessions: WEDNESdays, 10-11 am (MST)

Each session will include a facilitated discussion among class participants related to that week’s topic. A subject matter expert will lead the discussion, engage participants, and answer questions. This is a unique opportunity to connect concepts of evidence-based decision-making in your daily work! Below is the schedule for our live sessions.

weekly Online Learning activities

Each week, you must complete assigned online learning activities that include reading and watching videos. There will also be a short assignment to complete in preparation for each live learning session.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

• Assess the Community: Define the components of community health assessments, identify the types of data commonly used in assessments, and explain the reasons for conducting a community assessment.
• Quantify the Issue: Explore a variety of public health data sources and learn to search for and interpret relevant data.
• Develop a Concise Statement: Develop a concise statement for the public health problem/issue/policy under consideration in a measurable manner.
• Search & Summarize Literature: Use the process in systematic reviews, and identify key practice-relevant resources that summarize the literature on effective interventions.
• Prioritize: Describe why and how to prioritize program and policy options. Plus, gain an introduction to the role of group decision-making during the prioritization process.
• Action Plan: Identify key characteristics of public health planning, including the purpose and use of logic models, and the essential elements of work plans.
• Apply Economic Evaluation Concepts: Focus on the types of economic evaluations and how they can inform decision-making regarding public health interventions. Learn the steps involved in conducting an economic evaluation.
• Evaluate: Execute the basic components of an evaluation, including design, methods, and measurement. Plus, how to use and share results for policy intervention.
